If you are in Israel now, there is a good chance you have seen hundreds of women with red backpacks swarming the sites, streets, shops, and restaurants of Tel Aviv, Tiberias, Tsfat, and Jerusalem.
These are the Momentum Moms. And this group, made up of Mothers of Lone Soldiers, over 70 women from Philly, mental health practitioners from Chevy Chase, countless cities from across North America, and Moms from Israel– also, for the very first time, are joined by a group from INDIA!
Yes, a group of women from Mumbai, India, have joined us through our partner organization there, Chabad. What is awesome about this is not only do we now have over 300 partnering organizations in 35 countries (and growing) but our women from North America are inspired to see that we are a people, a people who come in all shapes, sizes, and shades.
On the first night, our Mumbai sisters wore saris and danced for us. No longer will the women in the room say they are “culturally Jewish.” Culture is defined by dress, language, music, and food….what do they have in common “culturally” with one another? Nothing.
This week these women will bond as Jewish mothers connecting to their common Jewish values, and that’s what binds us. And I personally cannot wait to one day, please G-d, travel to India to visit them in their home city. Because by the end of this week, we will be more than just a people. We will be family.
