Welcome to Israel

Day 1

I arrived from Tel Aviv this morning. We were told a driver would meet us and so when we cleared customs we looked among the many signs and my friend spotted the red momentum sign. As we approached who we thought was the greeter or maybe the driver, we heard cheerful singing in the middle of the airport lobby. We discovered a group of Momentum members and the Israeli participants as they began to sing to us and welcome us to Israel. All eyes turned on us, and a photographer caught the moment. The amazingly outgoing and friendly group introduced themselves to us. They embraced strangers and really helped us feel beyond welcome to what I anticipate is going to be an amazing place. My friend said it best, “I’ve never received a greeting like that. Not from my husband and not even from my dog.” I thought that was really funny but summed up the amazing and unforgettable greeting we received.

On the way to the hotel, we made new friends from Israel. As an introvert in many social situations, I am actually stepping out of my comfort zone and from the very beginning engaging in conversation with people all over the world. Tonight they shared that if you act happy and put yourself out there, you will feel happier. I plan to talk to more people, build connections throughout the week, dance, and just be myself.

The other takeaway that resonated with me was that when you see someone to avoid judging them. You never really know someone’s story and often walk in during Chapter 3. Everyone has a story. As a school counselor, I am always trying to share this with others, and it has been something I constantly share with my students and my kids, but I admittingly have been guilty of judging others. I think most of us have, but am going to try my best to be more positive and less judgmental as I hope others would do the same of me.

This week I will take more risks and be open to learning about myself and how I can bring back great values for my family. I look forward to a positive, engaging, and fun week.
