Welcome to Shabbat.
This Shabbat is a famous one, for it is the Shabbat Project. Established a few years ago in South Africa and now marked all over the world, this one Shabbat a year has become a unified effort to “keep it together.” Even those who don’t always mark it get into the spirit– Challah bakes (virtual this year), learning, community awareness, and celebration.
Of all the times, of all the years, we need this Shabbat more than ever. With election fever, our heads are filled with facts, data, predictions…we need a break!
By the time you read this, it could be America has, at last, declared a president. What a week! Like you, I followed, too much, the election returns, and with one night of little sleep, became a little “election jet-lagged.” Juggling work and the news… my mind is on overload.
I can’t wait to step back from the noise and let Hashem run the world. It’s time to “power down.” Let it go and let it flow for 25 hours, make havdalah, and “reboot.” I promise you that the world will look cleaner, clearer, and everything will fall into the right rhythm and perspective once again.

Morals Matter
Raising a mensch means teaching our kids what Judaism says about being a good person. Jewish wisdom teaches: praising a child’s ethics, morals, and ideals is more important than praising their academic marks. If our children’s honesty, inclusiveness, and kindness garners the same praise as an A on their report card, our children will develop healthy self-esteem that isn’t tied to their intellect or academic achievements.
