Arrival:
A flight to Israel is an experience that is the same as other long journeys—Spain, California—but clearly different. Davening for the men ‘who know’ commences when it gets dark, we land and a young and stern soldier greets us. The friendly cohort from Momentum-Israel announces our arrival with the blue and white flag and song. Luggage is collected. At the airport groups of young athletes are gathering for the Maccabiah (the opening ceremony is Thursday)—an exciting week in Israel.
President Biden is arriving later this week. We made it.
Spinning with Expectations
The first night’s festivities unfold and we circle the room together in a Horrah, spinning with expectation for the week ahead. These next days will be purely our own time—we are mothers, wives, professionals, community leaders, and home stewards. This week we are ourselves alone, women beginning a journey through Israel and also our own spiritual sensibilities.
Momentum’s leaders suggest, “look positive, stay positive. Get on your psychic surfboard and ride that wave.”
